CLINICS & SERVICES

DIABETIC CLINIC
All our doctors care for patients with diabetes. One of our nurse practitioners has a Diploma in Diabetes care and provides systematic follow up for an increasing number of patients at a level previously only available at the hospital.
This is supported by Dr Stephen Selby who has a special interest in diabetes and diabetic patients will have some of their follow up appointments booked with him.

Asthma And COPD clinic
All doctors provide care for patients with asthma and COPD. One of our practice nurses has obtained a BTS Certificate in asthma care and offers a specialist clinic for our asthmatic patients.
She provides most of the regular follow up appointments and is supported by Dr Huw Evans who has a special interest in Asthma and COPD.
She will refer any problems you may have either to your regular GP or to Dr Evans.

CORONARY HEART DISEASE CLINIC
All doctors provide care for patients with coronary heart disease.
If you have heart disease or have suffered a heart attack it is very important that you have the best treatment available and we provide a regular follow up with our nurse specialists to ensure that you receive optimal care.
We will review you in this clinic at least once a year.
Our nurses are supported in this clinic by Dr Kaiser who has a special interest in coronary heart disease.
Our nurses may refer any problems you may have to either your regular GP or Dr Kaiser.
We would encourage you to attend the clinics as invited.

BABY CHECKS
Dr Kaiser, Dr Selby, Dr Evans and Dr Vloemans provide medical health checks for six week old babies in line with current government recommendations.

Please ensure that you book your child’s six week check when you register your newborn child and your child’s three and a half year medical well in advance of your child starting school.

All other routine checks are now provided by our health visitor and her assistant.

HEALTH PROMOTION
The nurses provide advice on weight loss, smoking, diet, exercise and will check blood pressure on your request.

Regular exercise saves lives. If you can manage to spend half an hour every day doing something that makes you slightly breathless your heart will benefit and you will feel healthier.

You can do this in small bursts of 10 minutes each, and often by walking briskly
(so it is slightly difficult to talk, but not impossible).
A diet rich in fruit and vegetables (five helpings a day) and low in animal fat helpsyou to stay healthy.

It reduces your risk of heart disease and stroke, as well as cancer.
Why not pick up a diet sheet from the waiting room.
Obesity (being overweight or fat) increases your risk of developing diabetes and heart disease.

WELL WOMAN CLINIC
Smears save lives.
Our nurses are trained to do these competently.
Smears detect changes that if left untreated may lead to cancer.
A regular smear is the only known protection against cancer of the cervix.
Our nurse practitioners can competently deal with a wide variety of other women’s problems.

CHILD IMMUNISATIONS
This is the best provision you can make for your child’s future. They are your child’s birthright.

All immunisations we provide have been thoroughly tested and are known to be safe.

The diseases they protect from however, often kill and cripple for life.
Please ensure that you follow the recommended schedule.
If you have any concerns regarding immunisation please discuss them with your health visitor, doctor, or nurse. Please make an appointment with the nurse for immunisation in the baby clinic at West Street surgery on Mondays at 2.00pm.
Alternatively if the clinic time is inconvenient book an appointment with one of our practice nurses in their routine clinics for this to be carried out.

TRAVEL
Vaccinations and prophylactic medication are advised for many countries.
If your agent advises you that these are required, make an appointment with one of our practice nurses well in advance of your departure date to ensure that the immunisation schedule can be fully completed before you leave.
Similarly, if you have any queries phone the nurse for up to date advice.
We are an approved yellow fever centre and you do not have to be registered with the practice to receive a yellow fever vaccination.

CONTRACEPTION
All doctors and the majority of our nurses provide contraceptive advice, emergency contraception and prescribe pill or injection. You do not have to be registered with our practice to receive emergency contraception.
This is provided as routine to all women independently.
If you require emergency contraception please make sure you advise our receptionist that you require an emergency appointment, and the reason for the request.

If you have come to the reception desk to ask for such an appointment and feel uncomfortable, write it down on a piece of paper and pass this to our receptionist so that no one can overhear you.
Don’t forget that all the pharmacists in Newport can now provide emergency contraception free of charge.

COMING HOME FROM HOSPITAL

Routine Surgery
If you have been into hospital for planned surgery the hospital should provide you at discharge with medication for four weeks and any sick certificates that may be required until your outpatient appointment. We will deal with any emergencies that arise but please remember that it often takes 1-2 months before we receive any details with regard to your inpatient stay.

Emergency Admission
If you have been to hospital as the result of an emergency, a new medical problem or problems that have arisen out of a chronic condition please contact the surgery within two weeks after discharge. The hospital will have given you an envelope on discharge that informs us of any changes or additions to your medication.
It is important that you can review your admission with your GP.
However hospitals often have a large backlog of writing discharge letters.

When you make an appointment for a review, please advise our receptionist that this is the purpose of the appointment and ask her to check whether any information has been received. If there is a need for an appointment that relates to your admission before we have received the necessary information, we will try and obtain at least part of this information from the hospital.

Know Your Numbers
Preventing heart attacks and strokes is one of our main aims wherever possible.
This includes a healthy diet, regular exercise, avoidance of high alcohol intake and non smoking.
We would encourage you to see our nurses at least every 5 years to have your blood pressure and Body Mass Index checked (this reflects your weight and height).
Depending on these figures, whether or not you have a personal or family history of diabetes, heart, blood pressure or circulation problems the nurse will organise tests for cholesterol or diabetes.
We would strongly encourage you to see the nurse or the doctor before you start using any medication that can affect your cholesterol. All medical treatment needs to be carefully considered and you need to know true risks and benefits.

Minor Surgery
Dr Kaiser and Dr Evans perform some small surgical procedures mostly around moles that either cause irritation or are doubtful. All doctors will inject joints where this is required.

Planning A Pregnancy
If you are planning to become pregnant in the near or not so near future it is a good idea to make sure that your body is in good shape.
Regular exercise and a healthy diet are helpful.
Ideally you would start to take folic acid supplements about six months before you want to conceive (or as soon as possible when you find out that you have “fallen pregnant”).

This helps to reduce the risk of certain birth deformities. Smoking harms unborn babies and they are more likely to have to go to special care after delivery if you do smoke during pregnancy, why not give it up when you are planning for a pregnancy.
Have you been immunised against rubella (German measles)?
If you are not sure check with our practice nurses.
If you have not we can arrange for a blood test or an immunisation.

Stroke Clinic
All doctors provide care for patients who have suffered strokes.
If you have suffered a stroke or a TIA (mini stroke) it is very important that you have the best treatment available and we provide a regular follow up with our nurse specialist to ensure that that you receive optimal care.
We would encourage you to attend the clinics as invited.
Our nurses are supported in this by Dr Kaiser who has a special interest.
